Dynamic developers Dahill & Bunce have perfected the modern interpretation of a classic Brooklyn brownstone. The landmark renovation of this 1882 Neo-Grec townhouse results in a three-bedroom, 2.5 bath upper triplex with a separate garden level apartment totaling approximately 4,000 SQFT, plus a renovated cellar. This 20-foot wide townhouse with an extension and an additional top master floor sits on a 100-foot lot with five private outdoor areas throughout.
The highlights of 158 Halsey are the meticulous details, and the millwork is the absolute star. Hallways and stairs are wrapped in European high gloss Curmi wainscoting panels with a hand brushed treatment. Naturally finished doors at the parlor level are fabricated from book-matched fumed white oak with hand-brushed raised panels. Doorjambs, surrounds, casings, cast plaster rosettes, corbels, wood pediments and crown molding profiles are all lovingly designed in-house by Dahill & Bunce. Throughout, floors are fumed rift-sawn white oak with walnut borders and detailing.
The parlor floor imagines a lifestyle of cooking, entertaining and leisure. Kitchen cabinets and the island incorporate jewel-box design elements crafted in a dark fumed white oak veneer with touch latch drawers and doors. Custom fabricated open metal cabinets are patinated bronze with polished edges and black glass backs. A perfectly book matched stone backsplash and island counter are wrought in Calacatta Paonazzo marble. Appliances are by Thermador.
Off the kitchen, both the pantry and dining room provide a wall of French doors and refined fixed panel millwork. This gracious entertaining area leads onto the deck and into the garden below. The front parlor living room boasts classic bay-front windows and a newly fabricated traditionally styled gas fireplace with a restored marble mantel. A powder room completes this entertaining floor.
The glorious design of 158 Halsey Street culminates in the top floor oak and teak-clad master suite. This spa-like retreat includes a bedroom, dressing area and built-ins all crafted in fumed oak. The bathroom walls, ceiling and custom vanity are hand-oiled teak. The bathroom is wrought in Calcutta marble and the shower enclosure in bronzed glass. This floor is hidden from the street and set back from the cornice by a private terrace.
Two additional bedrooms are below; each have massive walk-in closets. This floor also offers a generously sized bathroom with double vanity and a nursey/home office. There is a large private terrace off the rear bedroom overlooking the garden.
A gracious and beautifully appointed one-bedroom garden-level apartment with an eat-in kitchen and mudroom provides either a great source of rental income or the perfect guest suite. The entire house has received a soup to nuts renovation of all mechanical systems including a zoned Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat HVAC system.
